THE EFFECT OF INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION ON PATIENT SAFETY COMPETENCE IN DIPLOMA NURSING EDUCATION STUDENTS IN JAKARTA

Patient safety remains a fundamental pillar of healthcare
quality. However, gaps in early-stage nursing education, particularly
in diploma programs, may hinder the development of essential
competencies. Interprofessional education (IPE) is increasingly
recognized as a strategic approach to enhance collaborative skills and
foster patient safety culture among health professions students. This
study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an IPE intervention in
improving patient safety competence, specifically knowledge, skills,
and attitudes among diploma nursing students in Indonesia. A quasi-
experimental pre-test–post-test design was conducted involving
112 final-year diploma nursing students from three institutions.
The intervention consisted of structured IPE modules emphasizing
communication, teamwork, and safety practices, co-facilitated by
nursing, midwifery, and medical educators. Data were analyzed using
paired t-tests and Cohen’s d to assess pre- and post-intervention
changes across three competence domains. Statistically significant
improvements were observed in all domains: knowledge (M = 3.12 to
4.02, p <.001, d = 1.23), skills (M = 2.98 to 3.84, p <.001, d =

1.19), and attitudes (M = 3.25 to 4.15, p <.001, d = 1.31). The effect
sizes indicated a large impact of the intervention across domains.
Interprofessional education substantially enhances patient safety
competence among diploma nursing students. The findings support
integrating IPE modules into early-stage nursing curricula as a
proactive strategy to cultivate collaborative and safety-conscious
healthcare professionals. Future research should explore long-term
outcomes, including clinical performance and patient-level safety
indicators
