ABSTRACT

Radita Andre Ramadhan (33190110), The Effectiveness of Using Role Play Technique in Improving the Speaking Skill of Nursing Students

This study aims to describe teaching and learning activities that can improve the speaking skills of nursing students through the use of role play. Based on classroom observations and interviews, it was revealed that there were problems related to students' speaking skills, teaching techniques, and teaching materials used in the classroom. Therefore, some learning activities using role play were created which will be used in classroom action research to improve students' speaking skills. Since good communication in English is essential for those who take nursing as their profession, this will ensure that their work meets global standards. Director of GITAM's Career Guidance Center, Rojeena Mathew, said, “Better communication skills will result in a higher quality of care offered to patients, which in turn will result in a better reputation for the hospital.” MEJ is a Nursing English Institution specialty within English for specific purposes (ESP) attempts to understand and describe the many ways in which English is used in medical fields. Researcher found that the lecturer at MEJ used role play. Role play method according to the lecturer is the best method and effective way in teaching. It can improve the speaking ability of nursing students because it gives student opportunities to practice communication in different context and roles. It also gives student chances to be more motivated and put themselves in another person place for a while.
