The Roles and Types of Sarcasm in “ Deadpool ” Movie Directed by Tim Miller

Sarcasm has become a significant aspect of popular culture, with one of the most notable examples being the character Deadpool in the Marvel movies. The use of sarcasm in this movie drives a Deadpool character more relatable to the audience and helps him stand out compared to other superheroes. The research aims to analyze the role of sarcasm in Deadpool and identify its types. Deadpool is known as a movie full of sarcasm, and this research uses desk research and descriptive qualitative research methods to provide a comprehensive overview of the movie. The descriptive approach aims to understand the movie from start to finish, while library research collects relevant data from various written studies. The research identified  five roles of sarcasm in the movie. They are for character development, plot advancement, thematic exploration, and audience engagement. The research also found four types of sarcasm they are propositional, lexical, "like"-prefixed, and illocutionary. The researcher found Propositional and Lexical sarcasm prevalent with 11 instances, while Prefixed and Illocutionary sarcasm were slightly less common with 9 instances each in the movie.
