Hikmatul Markhamah (33200063), Paths to Self-Discovery: The Role of Sin,
Redemption, and Evolution in Hermann Hesse’s “Demian” Novel.

As human life becomes increasingly complex, Hermann Hesse's novel “Demian: The
Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth” reflects the experience of self-discovery. Through the
main character, the writer explores sin, redemption, and personality evolution. The
writer adopts qualitative triangulation data methods consisting of document analysis,
multiple theories, and netnography samples from Quora and X platform as the result
of the novel's audience observation. This thesis analyses the main character, Emil
Sinclair, using psychoanalytic theories from Jung's 4 Archetypes (Persona, Shadow,
Anima/Animus, Self), Freud's 3 Mental Topographies (Id, Ego, Superego), and 2
Nietzschean philosophies (Critique of Morality, The Role of Unconscious) as primary
data. As secondary data, a literary ecology approach to the novel serves to support
findings on individual-social environment interactions through digital media
observation. These techniques reveal the unique personality dynamics of the main
character in his individuation process. This research clarifies the transformative
process of fostering human personal growth through literature and its benefits for
emotional intelligence to improve social and environmental interaction skills. Through
this exploration, the writer hopes readers gain novelty in understanding the essence of
moral values in a novel.
