A Qualitative Study of Politeness Strategies in EFL Classroom at Islamic College Jakarta

The aims of this paper are politeness and its realization in English as Foreign Language (EFL) classroom discourse. The theoretical part describes the most influential politeness theories and the findings on the topic of teaching pragmatics and linguistic politeness. The research in the thesis focuses on the analysis of teachers’ verbal realizations of politeness as found in the recordings of three English classes. The data was gathered by video-audio by recording the teachers’ utterances and the students’ compliances to the lecturer, in order to find the lecturer's politeness strategies and the students’ compliances to the lecturers’ utterances. In the data analysis, it is found that 1) there are positive politeness strategies and negative politeness strategies that are used by the lecturers and the students 2) The lecturers and students frequently used positive strategies as signs of a psychologically close relationship, reciprocity, and friendship in a group. The analytical part adopts the viewpoint of Brown and Levinson’s positive and negative politeness strategies. The last part of this paper aims at summarizing the implications that this paper, its theoretical summary, and its research, have for teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL).
