DISCRIMINATION OF MAIN CHARACTER IN SUFFRAGETTE MOVIE DIRECTED BY SARAH GAVRON

ABSTRACT 

Rahel Natasya Abigail (31160112), Discrimination of Main Character in

Suffragette Movie Directed by Sarah Gavron. 

This paper aims to identify the main female character‘s discrimination in her society

related to manifestation form of discrimination gender roles, to analyze her effort in

gaining equal roles in her society, and to reveal moral values behind her effort. This

paper is a descriptive-qualitative study. The subject of this paper was Suffragette

movie by Sarah Gavron. The supporting data were obtained from some sources, such

as books, articles, and journals, related to manifestation form of gender

discrimination, women‘s effort, and moral value. In collecting data, watch repeatedly

technique was used. The data analysis was conducted using Mansour Fakih’s theory

and Yusfia Haq’s theory. The results of this paper show three important points. First,

there are gender problems experienced by Maud Watts: manifestation form of gender

discrimination. Related to manifestation form of gender discrimination, there are five

forms of gender discrimination: marginalization, subordination, stereotype, violence

and burden. Second, there are also four forms of women‘s effort; study group, geder

training, propaganda and advocacy. Third, moral values reflected from the main

character was: courageous, hard worker and responsible.
