SPEECH ACT OF MAIN CHARACTER THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY MOVIE DIRECTED BY MATTHEW BROWN

ABSTRACT

 

Agung Arip Santoso (31140069), Analyze Speech Act of Main Character The Man Who Knew Infinit Movie.

In the study of language, what people do by saying something is called speech act. Speech acts is not only found in everyday life but also in the film. This research concerns with speech acts produced by the main character in “The Man Who Knew Infinity” movie script. Besides, the purpose of this research is also to know and describe the purposes of Srinivasa Ramanujan as the main character to use speech acts. The objects of this research are texts in the form of movie script. Austin’s (1962) theory of speech acts is applied in this research as the major theory. The types of research in this study are Descriptive and qualitative method. Descriptive method is a procedure to resolved problems who observation with describe situation, subject, and object the problem in the research or observation it can be in the form of people, organization, society, etc. Qualitative method is applied to analyze the data in the form of the text. The result of this research shows that the five types of speech acts produced by Srinivasa Ramanujan are Declaration, Representative, Expressive, Directive, and Commisives. Speech act show that Representatives Acts is dominantly used in this movie.
