The Role of Storytelling in Enhancing Students 'Understanding of Verb Tense'

This study aims to analyze the role of storytelling method in enhancing students understanding of English grammar, particularly verb tenses (Simple Present, Simple Past, and Simple Future Tense). The research was conducted in Grade VII at Bina Bangsa Mandiri 2 Junior High School using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. This iinstructional model applied was Storytelling-Based Grammar Learning, utilizing a narrative titled “Squirrel’s Dream House” as the core teaching material. Data collection instruments included written tests (pre-test and post-test), classrom observation, and story retelling tasks. The analysis revealed that over 70% of students showed significant improvement in their understanding of verb tenses after the implementation of storytelling-based learning. Futhermore, the method proved effective in increasing students speaking confidence, vocabulary acquisition, and classroom participation. The findings suggest that storytelling provides a meaningful, engaging, and contextual framework for grammar learning. It bridges the gap between grammatical rules and real communication. Therefore, storytelling is recommended as an effective and enjoyable strategy to teach grammar, particularly in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classrooms.
